Today was my last day in Auckland. I really enjoyed my time here and would come back one day if I got the chance. My flight to Christchurch was not until later in the day, so I decided to have a leisurely stroll over to the Auckland Art Gallery (Toi o Tamaki) which I had heard about and is actually free to get in! The gallery is the principal public gallery of Auckland and houses over 15000 works. There is also a nice shop and café inside – so well worth a visit if you enjoy a bit of artistic culture, and perhaps even if you don’t?
Outside the Art Gallery is Albert Park, which is one of Auckland’s iconic parks. The park is actually located on a hill; therefore, there are a few steps to engineer to get up there. This lovely green space is not huge but offers a refreshing contrast and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The park has some incredible trees and offers great views of the city. There is also a central Victorian fountain and several paths to wander down, as well as a few benches to sit on if you fancy a rest or some time to enjoy the scenery. You can also learn a little about the historic park by taking a look at some of the statues and plaques that are dotted around the park. So, anyway, these are my two free recommended little adventures in Auckland centre, and a great way to spend a bit of leisurely time – especially on your last day!
